What are we doing?
Mark Henning and Hannah Williams are two information designers based in Cape Town who have initiated a personal project to create a set of schematic South African public transport maps, much like those one would find in many developed cities around the world.
It all started after Mark returned to Cape Town after travelling and working in Europe as a designer. Having grown accustomed to the efficient and well utilised public transport systems in many European cities, he was frustrated when using the public transport in Cape Town.
He found that a public transport system exists, but as someone new to the city, it was difficult to find out where and how to use it, particularly when using minibus taxi's.
He was surprised to find that no publicly available map of public transport exists in Cape Town. Mark discussed this with Hannah, and together they decided to use their skills and experience to pro-actively tackle this daunting task.
To date they have dedicated their spare time and personal resources, after hours and on weekends, to this project that they see as an opportunity to use their particular skill set to make a tangible difference to the everyday lives of people in South Africa. Schematic public transport maps are not a particularly original idea - it's really just common sense.
